A man takes a neon sign from his family’s restaurant: Taverna Miresi, the Restaurant of Kindness. He places it on the stage, where its light can reach inside his memories and begin to illuminate the songs, dances and rituals of his Albanian sisters.
After the funeral of his larger-than-life father, Mario, now the only man left, follows the women in his family as they glance off ghosts and summon their own phantoms and fantasies. In an ecstatic series of tableaus, Mario unleashes their dreams, iridescent rage and soaring songs to create an unforgettable feast of beauty.
Recently awarded the Silver Lion Award at the Venice Biennale, Mario Banushi does not use words to tell his stories. His theatre is entirely visual – and it is rapidly defining the future of theatre across the world. Be enraptured by it.
